Jobs and art

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

Yes, I am almost there. Can't wait!

My art is back at home and I feel more peaceful that the paintings are back. I look at them and realize how much my technique has improved from the early paintings on. I like to have my older and newer paintings up to remind me how much i still have to learn and paint! I can't wait to be able to paint more...
From Nataša 's Art

I had a lot of great feedback on my zebra paintings. I am going to paint more paintings using just simple shapes and only two colors.

"Five Spring Birches" textured birch thick texture painting

I ordered my business cards today finally. I am such a slacker :) They should look pretty good. I made some quick on the printer last night but they kept printing outside the printing range, so i finally gave up. This week is turning out to be super busy - plus my little one was throwing up last night. He looks and feels good today. I have a feeling he ate way too much!!!!

16"X20" on Ampersand panel

Tomorrow I will be at the Cherry BLossom Gallery from 5 pm to 9 pm - Join us for an evening of fun and art! The Ice sculptures are already in making - ice sculptors are hard at work! Cherry Blossom Gallery is right across the street from 4-5 sculptures. Hope to see you there :)

"The Secret Path" textured aspen birch painting

16"X20" Acrylic on Ampersand panel

I am really into painting birches these days - I even painted another one while at the show on Saturday. I am thinking what i will be painting for demo on the next Saturday. There is an ice sculpture show in old town Loveland and I will keep my paintings up at Cherry Blossom Gallery over the week and be there again next week. Looking forward to mingling with other artists again. I feel so happy live in an area where there are many wonderful professional artists. I feel humbled and inspired to paint more.
Well, back to work - so much to do!!!

Due to allergy reasons mainly, and my fear of a dry tree catching on fire, I put up a pre lit artificial tree every year for the holidays. Of course, this choice is part of my recycle/freecycle/reduce/reuse policy that runs in our family's lifestyle.

Sometimes we forget how much good we already have in our lives - our friends, family, roof over our heads, jobs, food, clothes, beautiful nature around us. I am grateful for all the wonderful people in my life and I am looking forward to a peaceful and hopefully snowy holidays :).

This painting "Good Luck" is now in a collection of our dear friends in Boulder, CO.

"Birches IV"

I spent most of the day at the show on Saturday and painted. It was a different kind of experience - painting in front of other people, but I decided to push my own limits and see if I can do that! It was not bad at all :). You can tell it is a big deal for me because i am still thinking about it. I will have another demonstration on Saturday this weekend.

Painting at the show

there I am - painting in front of people! This was my first time painting in public  - a bit scary at first but I decided in advance to do a safe painting (birch trees) :)

"Birches II" textured acrylic metallic gold fall painting

Last night I watched a movie called "Seraphine" about a French painter Seraphine Louis. I appreciated this movie so much! We all have our struggles in life and hurdles to jump. But sometimes we lose track of who we really are and do not prioritize to make our dream come true. And most importantly - we forget how lucky we are to be able to do as much as we do in one day. Simple things I take for granted - like washing machine, dishwasher - help so much in every day life, especially if one has little kids around.

From Natasa's Art

12"X12" gallery wrapped canvas with edges painted black - this painting is ready to be hung on the wall. I am pretty much ready for the show next Friday. I am excited to meet new artist friends and show my work locally in Loveland, CO.  This painting is SOLD!

Simple life, Aspen gold metallic texture acrylic painting

I am preparing for the show in December and this is one of the bigger paintings I will bring to the show.  - the painting is 3X4 ft!
I love painting aspens. I focus on the tree trunks and make the background more abstract. There is a lot of texture in my paintings - but in aspen paintings there seems to be even more texture.

"Burst of Color"

I dislike clutter, in my surroundings and in my life. This year has been all about simplifying and reducing the clutter. We are pretty much done renovating our old home and it is a wonderful and warm place to live. I love the craftsmanship and quality of work done on the wood details. The stairs and floors are amazing. You cannot find planks that long today! Sure - there are no right angles in our home anywhere :) but it has warmth and beauty one cannot find in most contemporary built homes.

Botanical garden

Went to the botanical garden today and really enjoyed walking through it - especially the Japanese garden. Brought back memories from the time we lived there for a few months. There is a huge pond and some healthy looking koi - hungry and big too :). I studied them for a while - I have been meaning to paint them for awhile now. Such bright colors - combined with water reflections - it is going to be a challenge. I am looking forward to painting more....

"Aspen at Night II"

Here is a second painting in a diptych and a detail of it - you can see the remnants of golden Fall leaves and reflections of the remaining foliage in the background. Soon - it will be winter.

Please visit my new website at

When I work on a heavily textured painting I like to use the flexible modeling paste (made by Liquitex) on canvas. This paste is formulated to be able to stretch and not crack if the canvas or paint undergo some environmental changes.

"Aspens at Night I" Aspen textured painting

One of the choices I made regarding my art is to use gallery wrapped canvas on 1.5" thickness stretchers or thicker. This way I eliminated the need to frame the paintings and I can have them ready to hang. Of course - there is an option to frame them as well if one so desires. Most of my paintings have black painted edges and are ready to hang on the wall.

Here is a close up detail of the aspen painting. DId I mention I love texture? I have been working on these two paintings off and on for the last month and finally they are both done. I will post the second one tomorrow.

This painting is 12"X48" and is a part of a diptych I finished late last night (or should I say early this morning!).

Today started off really windy - it still is. I am getting ready to do some serious work.

Art studio tour

There was an art studio tour today in Loveland. More than 50 artists participated this year. It is still going on tomorrow. I visited several studios this morning and had a lot of fun meeting other artists in town and seeing how others arrange their creative spaces. Of course - every artist dreams of a fabulous studio with huge windows and northern light, but it really does not take much to set up an art studio.

This painting is sold.

Many artists live in Loveland, CO. Yet, there is no art supply store here. There is Jerry's in Ft. Collins - but they do not usually keep much in stock (especially canvases). I usually order my art supplies online. This requires advanced planning and making sure there is a supply of paint and canvases in my studio. Speaking of my studio...

"Curious" 16"X20" SOLD

I am so grateful for craigslist! I was able to equip my studio with some really nice art supplies through our local listings at very affordable prices. My furniture mover (read husband :)) will be there in the afternoon to re-arrange things on our enclosed patio/sunroom where I will set up a professional studio again.

I am so excited!

"Nine Sunflowers" by Natasa Vretenar

"Refreshed" abstract nude by Natasa Vretenar

As an artist I find human body to be beautiful, and oh so very hard to capture its beauty with paint.

Since I was a kid I loved swimming. In the lakes, sea, ocean, pools - you name it! This painting was made as I was thinking about coming out of a lake and running through the tall grass to grab a towel to dry off water droplets. 12"X12" on gallery wrapped canvas. Made with palette knives.

U zadnje vrijeme slikam spahtlama i uzivam u tome. Svidja mi sto mogu da nanosim debele slojeve boje na platno bez poteskoca.

"Along I-25 - IV" Abstracted New Mexico Landscape by Natasa Vretenar

12"X12" New Mexico Landscape

Ove cetiri slike Novog Meksika idu jedna uz drugu i bas lijepo izgledaju tako poredjane jedna do druge. Ovaj pejzaz je naslikan po mom sjecanju. Mnogo sam putovala na I-25 izmedju Kolorada i N. Meksika i boje su uvijek intenzivne, a teren surov i nepristupacan, a u isto vrijeme fascinirajuci.

"Along I-25" Abstracted New Mexico Landscape by Natasa Vretenar

12"X12" New Mexico Landscape. I love  both New Mexico and Colorado. For an artist - these two states provide a never ending source of inspiration. This painting has a lot of texture and beautiful New Mexico desert colors. This painting is available and can be purchased on my website

It takes a lot of time to upload all the pictures and organize things on the site. But i am really liking it so far. I hope to finish a few paintings soon - i have been working on several at the same time but have not been able to wrap any of them up.

There is a smell of Fall in the air in Colorado - here is one of my Fall aspen paintings. THis painting is SOLD.

Seriously stressful...

Just when it seems that things are starting to come together something happens that shakes it all up. My toddler decided to stick his finger in a can with a lid still attached to it at one end and his finger got stuck. He ended up getting 4 stitches today.
This painting is called unconditional love...

"Fragmented III" Abstract Acrylic Mixed Media by Natasa Vretenar

The last of the triptych. 12"X12" on gallery wrapped canvas 1.5" thick with edges painted black. Ready to hang. I like the subtle 3D effect the solid glass beads give.

"Fragmented II" Abstract Acrylic Mixed Media by Natasa Vretenar

When I decided to devote my time seriously to art I went through a stage when I had to try as many mediums as possible. Therefore - I bought soft pastels, oil pastels, oils, acrylics, canvases, solid supports. I slowly figured out what works and what does not work for me. I love working with oils - but decided against them because of having small kids in the house and not having a separate studio. I finally settled on acrylics - they dried fast and the abundance of acrylic mediums, gels, pastes and paints made it easy for me. If you have not noticed yet - I do love texture :) I am learning new techniques every day, trying to add mixed materials to my paintings, testing different glues and supports for my art. It is so much fun!

Palette Knife Paintings

I really enjoy working with palette knives. They allow me to add texture to my painting faster and thicker than brushes. Technique also helps me paint in a more free and loose way. One of my seascape paintings is especially dear to me - lot of texture and bright colors - yet peaceful. "Mediterranean SUnset" is 30"X30" on 1.5" gallery wrapped canvas.

"Fragmented I" Abstract Acrylic Mixed Media by Natasa Vretenar

Science and Art intertwine in my life. On my life journey I embraced them both - off and on and sometimes even found time to do both concurrently. My main interest is optics - science of light.

The question whether light are streams of particles (corpuscles) or waves is a very old one. This "either - or"formulation was classically natural and alien to the advanced "both - and" even the "neither - nor" solution of today. Early in the nineteenth century experiments were suggested and made to show that light is a wave motion.

Newton's theory of light had seemed suitable to explain the straight-line casting of sharp shadows of objects placed in a light beam. But wave theory was needed to explain interference where the light intensity can be enhanced in some places and diminished in other places behind a screen with a slit or several slits. The wave theory is also able to account for the fact that the edges of a shadow are not quite sharp.

This dual nature of light is fascinating, and to be able to mathematically and experimentally play with light is truly a joy to me.

In art - I also love to play with light. In this case - it is with colors. Mixing colors to achieve the desired effect is not trivial. I also try adding new elements to my paintings that bring a new dimension to it. Today's painting is an abstract in which i used 6 mm diameter glass beads to refract the light and add 3D effect to the painting.

"Silver Zebra" Abstract Acrylic Silver Black Zebra painting by Natasa Vretenar

This painting is 24"X30" large . Looks fabulous in a modern home.

I have been traveling a lot and have tons of time at the airport - and I am thinking about putting together a little painting box that can go through the security. I could definitely utilize my time better while i wait for the plane to take off.

I wonder what if...

One did not buy a new car but went to a gallery and bought a large sculpture. Or a painting...
12"X12" Sold

What if one did not buy a bunch of junk at Walmart but went to an art gallery opening and bought a small painting. Or a sculpture...

What if art was more valuable than stuff made in China or child-labor factories all over the world?

Back to blogging with "Five Sunflowers"

It has been a crazy busy summer for me. Juggling too many responsibilities and had no time to do what I love to do most - paint. I have been thinking a lot about painting though and that counts for something. I have tons of ideas - just need to put them down on canvas :)

Here is one painting to kick off the painting boom!

This one has purple sky (surprise - that is my favorite color!) and five gorgeous flowers. They are everywhere in Colorado - wild ones by the side of the roads and big gorgeous planted ones in our neighborhood in old town Loveland.

What a day!

This is a double rainbow in northern NM a few days ago - it was unbelievably beautiful and a rare sight to see a full double rainbow - it was huge!

We went for a walk along Bosque today (by Rio Grande Nature Center) and a huge tree fell down right in front of us! It was so scary and our family was within 5 yards from it! Good thing it did not hit another tree - it would be impossible to avoid it if it fell in our direction. That certainly would be a strange way to depart this world.

Then we stopped by Los Poblanos lavender store and looked at the lilly pond - it looks gorgeous this time of the year. They also have lavender fields and it smells delightful. I took a lot of pictures and am sure there will be some paintings soon. Love the lavender!!! It reminds me of Adriatic coast.

Happy 4th of July!
Live colorfully!
