Golden Calf, Natasa Vretenar

I used a lot of different mediums for this one! I used Liquitex modeling medium for the buffalo, coarse Golden medium for the earth below his feet, and many layers of gels and acrylic paints. I am also enjoying using my new Molotov acrylic markers in gold and silver.

This painting is 24x36"

All of my paintings for the next show are ready to go. I just need to print out labels and I am ready to setup tomorrow at the Carrot Gallery!

Art in Park(Allen) , Natasa Vretenar

Yesterday was a busy day for me and my wonderful husband who helped me setup and take down my booth at the Art in Park event. There were many artists there (more than 100), and I got to walk around and check everyone's art and meet a few artists that I have been following on the FB but did not have a chance to meet in person yet :). It is really nice to get to know someone in real life after finding them online and admiring their art, and then see their art in real life. Art always looks better in real life!

So, I woke up early, had some usual Turkish coffee and started loading stuff in the van. I am happy to say that everything fit in the vehicle. 15 grid walls, 6 ft foldable table, tent canopy, table cloths, about 80 paintings (mostly smaller format, but a few big ones too). It took 2 of us about 1 hr to set up everything and tie all the grids together. Then I arranged the paintings - I brought mostly floral paintings, and some birds.

Here is my setup:

The weather was perfect for most of the day, except towards the end of the show - there was some rain and wind and we packed up a bit earlier than planned.  I came well prepared, with a hat and sunglasses, and sunscreen, as well as a jacket - Alberta weather can change quickly.

My tent was right in front of the hill on which the stage was set, so I got to enjoy the music from the front row seat :). The festival was on a closed off street - only pedestrians allowed and well organized. Many thanks to Pardee who organized the show - it is a lot of work to organize an event like this. Artists in Edmonton do need more opportunities to show their work in public, and it is great to have an opportunity to participate in a free event. A lot of people stopped by the tent, asked questions about my art, got my cards and brochures. I did not sell anything, but I got some good feedback, met interesting people and fellow artists. It was a really fun day and well worth the effort.

Every show I participate in, helps me hone in my art, rethink the path I am taking on my art journey.

Buffalo 24x36", Natasa Vretenar

I am back in Edmonton, and painted today after settling in yesterday. It is fun to travel but it definitely disrupts the painting routine. I am not complaining though - got a ton of lovely reference photos and a few sketches while traveling.

I am back to my animal series. This painting is a big painting 2 ft by 3 ft. I painted it with a lot of texture and tried a few more Holbein colours. I just love their beautiful selection of different hues - can't get them in other brands and they are bright and unusual.

oh, and here is a closeup of the texture

In the Garden, Natasa Vretenar

This is a little 8x10" painting i managed to squeeze in while traveling :). I have a few more going. I am working with a limited palette. This time I did not bring any of my supplies with me and had to replenish since I was having withdrawals from not painting! I finally got some time to go to the art store and buy a few basic paints and canvas sheets to paint a few studies.

On the side of the road, Natasa Vretenar

There are crosses all over NM. We visited Los Golondrinas Ranch (Swallows) and there was this large cross in the middle of the property, with rocks around it and a bunch of smaller crosses around it. Sometimes, there are also little shrines set up on the side of the road - usually where there was an accident and someone died...

To me these crosses are a reminder that cycle of life must go on, and that we will all one day end up 6 ft under. A reminder to be kind, and enjoy simple things in life, such as this beautiful day in NM with fluffy clouds, clean air and sunshine.
